Ode to summer

The Base Stealer
by Robert Francis

Poised between going on and back, pulled
Both ways taut like a tightrope-walker,
Fingertips pointing opposites,
Now bouncing tiptoe like a dropped ball
Or a kid skipping rope, come on, come on,
Running a scattering of steps sidewise,
How he teeters, skitters, tingle, teases,
Taunt them, hovers like an ecstatic bird,
he's only flirting, crowd him, crowd him,
Delicate, delicate, delicate, delicate--now!

There is nothing like a thief on the field to pique one's interest in the game.

Good moments, those.

Go Cubs!

(Yeah, I know I live in St. Louis, land of the red birds....long story, die hard heritage.)

Such a beautiful game. Long, but beautiful.

Rudee: Baseball and soccer seem to the only two sports I can actually follow. I don't know how you can spot the puck in hockey. I think my eyes only have a slo-mo speed.

Gaston: We'll soon have an outdoor field for the Twins. I wasn't in favor it (using public money, and all) but I may have to break down and go to a game!

Pyzahn: So you're from Chi-town? Whereabouts? Mr. B lived in Park Forest.

DBSO: And so fun to see a bunch of guys taking themselves seriously in jammies!
